The extent to which African countries were able to conduct independent policies during the cold war period was one that was rigorous.It was found out that only two African states such as Ethiopia and Liberia survived while a lot of others failed but there were lots of agitations and movements by African countries against foreign policies and involvement.What was the independence movements about?The Independence movement in Africa was one that began in the early 1960’s. It is one that brought about a lot of foreign policy opportunities to the United States as well as the Soviet Union. A lot of African countries were able to conduct independent policies during the cold war period through the use of different movement such as the African nationalist movement and other forms of agitations.After World War 2 new World Powers were beginning to emerge and take powerand the two juggernauts of the World during this time were America and USSR. Bothcountries in the beginning considered each other as allies, but as the USSR’s sphere ofinfluence began to grow as they were taking over more and more eastern European land,and colonies, America felt threatened and so they began a Cold War, as they didn’t want toforce the world into another global war. Thus this war was fought with money, andtechnology. The two countries would engage in various proxy wars around the world,mainly in recently decolonized states such as those in Latin America, Southeast Asia, andAfrica. Most of the military focus of the proxy wars were in Latin America and SoutheastAsia, as many African states were still colonized, and many Westerners believed that allAfrican independence was a sign of terrorism, so there wasn’t huge wars taking place asseen in Vietnam or in Korea. But would still ostracize the African countries, and beganincreasing tensions in the state if the other party was pushing their ideals on an Africancountry. Therefore, I believe that newly decolonized African countries had very limitedindependence when inducting policies, as every single move that they made would eitheranger the USSR or the US causing economic, social, and political disaster in their country.
